Ski Sport Verbier

Up there, silence glides

Sometimes it only takes a few meters to change worlds.
In Verbier, while Les Ruinettes hum with the movement of alpine skiers, a slight detour is enough to step somewhere else entirely. Up there, on the plateau stretching toward La Chaux, time slows down. Sounds fade away. And the mountain begins to speak again.

The Verbier cross-country ski trail has not always been this expansive. For a long time, it was a discreet out-and-back track between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux. A confidential route, almost secret. Over the years, it has grown and found its identity. Today, it features a red loop and a black loop, offering a true high-altitude cross-country skiing experience—something rare in the region.

Alone facing the Combins

What strikes you here, even before the quality of the trail, is the setting.
Facing the majestic Combins massif, beneath the imposing Bec des Rosses, skiers move through a landscape that feels untouched. Only a few meters separate this place from the crowds… and yet you feel almost alone in the world.

Here, cross-country skiing takes on another dimension. Each push becomes a dialogue with the mountain. Your breath adjusts to the rhythm of the terrain. Your gaze drifts far away, toward ridgelines that tell the story of the Val de Bagnes.

Skating or classic, each at your own pace

The trail is prepared for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. The tracks are wide, clear, and impeccably groomed. A level of preparation rarely found elsewhere in the region, particularly appreciated by experienced skiers.

But this place is not reserved for an elite few. Quite the opposite.
Lessons are available through the Swiss Ski School of Verbier and other local schools. Even without advanced technique, this trail can be embraced as a moment of escape. You move, you breathe, you reconnect. And you return feeling calmer and somehow taller.

Altitude, an adventure in itself

Here, cross-country skiing takes place at altitude. And that changes everything.
Your breath is shorter. Your legs burn more quickly. Performance is not the same as on the plains or in mid-mountain terrain. But that is precisely what makes the experience so unique. Every kilometer carries a different weight. You learn to listen to your body, to slow down, to accept a different rhythm.

Cross-country skiing in Verbier is not about speed. It is about embracing effort as a form of moving meditation.

A timeless pause

Midway along the route, a break feels almost natural. Beneath the Gentianes gondola, you can make your way to Le Dahu for a simple, welcoming pause overlooking the vast landscape. A hot tea, a few shared words and the desire to set off again.

The trail offers several exit options: beneath Jumbo, or by gliding back gently to Les Ruinettes. To reach it, however, you must begin with the journey itself: access is via the ski lifts, and a valid pass is required. A constraint perhaps but also a guarantee that this space remains preserved, almost suspended in time.

Another vision of the mountains

This cross-country trail reveals a lesser-known side of Verbier. A resort capable of offering, just steps away from its vibrant energy, spaces of absolute calm. Places where you do not consume the mountain but move through it, humbly.

At Besson Immobilier, we value these hidden places. The ones that do not reveal themselves immediately. The ones that require curiosity and time. Because they are often the ones that leave the deepest impression.

Up there, between sky and snow, cross-country skiing becomes much more than a sport.
It becomes an experience. Almost an adventure.

Practical information

For those planning their outing, here are a few useful details:

  • Blue loop (historic route): approximately 6 km out and back, with a generally flat profile, ideal for a gentle introduction or a contemplative glide.
  • Red loop: approximately 1.4 km, with a more varied profile and several demanding sections, featuring around 45 m of elevation gain, making it short but dynamic.
  • Black loop: approximately 1.4 km, designed for experienced skiers, with approximately 112 m of elevation gain, making it a demanding and sustained route.

The trail is accessible via the ski lifts (Ruinettes – La Chaux sector). A valid ski pass is therefore required. Standard Verbier / 4 Vallées lift pass rates apply, available for one or several days. A pedestrian pass valid for cross-country skiers is also available for the day at a price of CHF 25.–.

To plan your outing or download the route to your watch or GPS device, the GPX track is available directly on the Verbier Tourism website:
