When life, sport, and fate all play out in a single heartbeat.
Prologue – Ashes and embers
He’s one of those you think have been extinguished… but who reignites their fire where others would have given up.
Philippe May, known as “Fifi,” doesn’t chase medals. He moves forward, head held high, heart assisted, legs forever on the run.
A few discreet tattoos mark his scars. He cuts through life like he slices through snow at 250 km/h: with rage, instinct, and precision.
What flows through his veins isn’t just blood—it’s embers. A promise of fire.
A phoenix from Valais. Born in Verbier in 1970. Risen a thousand times from the ashes.
Chapter I – The fractured nest
When his father passed away, Philippe was only 6 years old. A heart that gave out too soon, a home thrown into turmoil, a childhood shaken. Versegères, a small village down in the valley, became his refuge. But Verbier remained his guiding light. The mountain child dreamed of snow, lines, and speed. He pursued competitive skiing and gravitated toward that world. He was mostly alone, with little family support at races, unlike other kids cheered on by passionate parents.
But that was where the fire started.
Silent. But unbreakable.
“I saw the others, always supported. Me? I had to do everything alone. I learned to fight very early on.”
Chapter II – The Phoenix takes flight
As a teenager, he trained and completed his apprenticeship as a carpenter. But wood wasn’t enough to feed his fire.
A knee injury put an end to his alpine skiing dreams—or so he thought.
But a phoenix doesn’t die. It transforms.
He earned his ski instructor license to stay on snow in another way.
Still hungry for competition, a friend introduced him to speed skiing—known as kilomètre lancé—a high-speed discipline where skiers fly straight down steep slopes, chasing the absolute limits of human velocity.
This wasn’t a random choice: the lack of turns made it easier on his injured knee.
That’s when everything opened up.
No curves. No detours. A straight line.
Just like him.
“I sacrificed a lot. I often slept in my car so I could train. I quit my job and lived off odd jobs. But I held on. Like I always do.”
When the body falters, the spirit finds strength in a new breath. Philippe discovered a new terrain—gentler on the body, but no less intense.
A powerful breath, that of the phoenix refuses to burn out, carrying his flame ever further.
In this world of adrenaline and precision, Philippe began stacking achievements: podiums, wins, a crystal globe…
His name became a force in the sport.
And it’s there, in this high-speed arena, that he met Tracie Sachs—an American athlete and multiple world champion in speed skiing.
She would become his wife, his rock, his lifelong teammate.
Two flames. Two trajectories. One fire.
Chapter III – Beneath the wings of the Pheonix
In 2008, he became the director of the Swiss Ski School in Verbier.
He brought the same values to leadership as he did to racing: discipline, ambition, and attention to detail.
What he learned on the slopes, he applied to managing the institution.
He drew inspiration from his travels, competitions, and global encounters. He opened his mind. He listened. He Observed. He adapted. And breathed new life into the ski school, propelling it toward greater standing in the mountain world.
Charismatic, sharp, but fair, he led like he skied a perfect powder line: with control, fluidity, and vision.
Always ready. Always standing.
“It’s like a race. You have to manage every detail. Listen. Adapt. Pass it on”
Chapter IV – Against fear
2014. A new challenge: the RAAM—the legendary Race Across America by bike.
An extreme endurance event: 5,000 kilometers, 50,000 meters of elevation, through blazing deserts, brutal Rockies, wild winds, and shattered sleep. He had been eyeing it for five years. His personal Everest.
Arriving on American soil, he felt something wasn’t quite right. Subtle but persistent signs.
He got checked out. One week before the race, the diagnosis dropped: arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia—a rare heart condition where muscle cells are replaced by fat and scar tissue, disrupting electrical signals and leading to dangerous arrhythmias.
Sudden Cardiac Death was a real risk.
A sword through the fire.
From now on, his heart would be monitored by a defibrillator.
A life hanging by a thread.
For doctors, intense exertion was now forbidden ground.
No more pushing limits.
No more being… himself.
But fate had other plans.
In San Diego, he met an extraordinary cardiologist. A doctor who understood that Philippe could never live in fear.
He was the one who implanted the defibrillator. But more importantly—he was the one who went against medical norms, and let him get back on the road, back in the saddle, back in the fight.
And he stayed by Fifi’s side.
Even during races, where Philippe’s heart data is streamed live and closely monitored.
“Wait around for my heart to fail? No way. That’s not living. I’d rather live fully—even if it means leaving sooner.”
Chapter V – Reborn on two wheels
He got back on the bike.
And rode.
RAW, RAAM, RAE, RAP… legendary ultracycling races, spanning hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.
Crazy races that tear across entire continents—through pain, beauty, doubt, and euphoria.
Sometimes he wins. Sometimes he fails. But he keeps going.
“Even with a connected heart, I’m more alive than most. I’m a medical anomaly. But above all, I’m free.”
But the story doesn’t stop there.
Over time, through training and racing, new cardiac episodes emerged.
In June 2021, just days before a race, he received a violent, unexpected shock.
Crushing pain.
A jolt - his defibrillator, his silent teammate, his invisible guardian - without whom his heart might have chosen eternal silence.
Two years later, in June 2023, one of its leads cracked: emergency replacement ensued.
Brutal reminders that the fire within him sometimes flirts dangerously with the flame.
But every time, he grits his teeth. He gets back up, and keeps on going.
Because for Philippe, pain is just part of the ride.
And fear never grabs the handlebars.
But how far can a battered heart carry the dreams of a phoenix?
Epilogue – “The heart has its reasons, which reason does not know.”¹
Philippe May is pure instinct.
A man who fits in no box.
Not medicine. Not sport. Not a quiet, tidy life type.
But a man of respect. Of fire. Of audacity.
A rock’n’roll phoenix.
And if science can’t explain how he’s still standing—he can.
He listens to his body. His fire. His gut.
And today, more than ever, he moves forward. Always.
Even when everything seems lost before it begins.
